How to protect your low pitch roof

Posted on February 28, 2015 · Posted in Roof Maintenance, Single Ply Rubber Roofing

For Maine’s homeowners and business owners with flat or low pitch roofs, concerns over how to keep that roof safe from damage and leaks are real. Flat or low pitch roofs, also called low slope roofs, are common on larger buildings such as shopping centers, schools and warehouses. With large-scale buildings a sloped roof, which would be seen on a home or small business, is not practical.

At Horch Roofing we use EPDM rubber roofing to ensure that low pitch roofs are protected against the elements. Generally the biggest threat to a flat roof is standing water. With an improperly treated roof, standing water can begin to wear through the roof causing damage and leaks. With EPDM rubber roofing, the strong rubber membrane creates impenetrable barrier against water.

If your existing low pitch roof is currently using asphalt shingles, it may be time to consider upgrading to EPDM rubber roofing. Asphalt shingles cannot only be damages by snow, ice, wind and rain, but even with underlayment, they do not create as strong of a seal as rubber roofing.

If you are considering EPDM rubber roofing, looking to have a roof installed or repaired, please feel free to give us a call at (207) 273-1111. Our staff will be happy to answer any additional questions you might have.
