Can I Attach Something To My Asphalt Roof?

Are you wondering how to install a dish on your roof so that you can get better TV reception? Perhaps you are adding a home security system and hoping to add a few cameras around the outside of your home. Can you really install a camera directly on roof shingles? The roof is one of the most important areas of your home. Before you attach anything to it, it’s important to take a few key steps to minimize any risk of damage.

Before You Install Something on Your Roof

It’s not uncommon for property owners to want to add items to their roof – from dishes for satellite TV to security cameras, Christmas lights, and much more. Before you do, ensure that a roofing professional tells you that the surface is safe and able to support whatever item you are attaching. You should not attempt to inspect the roof surface on your own.

Then, turn to the manufacturers. For example, you can have a satellite TV dish installed on your roof by allowing that company’s technicians to do the work for you. That minimizes any risk that you’ll fall or that the system will not hold due to improper installation.

Why Can’t You Just do it Yourself?

If you plan to install a camera on your roof or install a dish on a shingled roof surface, you may need to use nails, which create holes in an otherwise waterproof surface, exposing the entire structure to moisture problems. While this might work in some situations, unless you keep the shingle flat against the roof and ensure the nails are at the correct depth, there may not be enough support to hold the weight of your item.

You can, however, successfully install a camera or other item on an asphalt surface by simply working with a roofing professional. Our team at Horch is happy to assist you in the installation process to ensure not only that you are maintaining the structural integrity of your roof but are also installing the equipment in a safe manner to minimize the risk of it (or you!) falling. Whenever possible, avoid adding any type of attachment directly into the roof itself, and never when it is going to create an area where water can seep in. This puts your roof at risk and can create a worrisome situation for years to come.
